It is this fateful day. the fifth day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. whose anniversary we are celebrating today. BenGurion recalled the lengthy struggle which had preceded the resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on November 29. 1947the resolution which established an "independent Jewish State in Palestine." Fourteen years have passed since that momentous Sabbath eve. They have been years of accomplishment. years of vast immigration. years of amazing economic growthbut also years of undesired warfare followed by an uneasy peace. Now Israel has survived the most dangerous period of her history. She has established firm bonds of friendship with many of the newly independent nations of Africa and Asia.
