Second. Next came Cuba. We trained. equipped. and transported Cuban refugees who wanted to free their country and their fellow citizens from the slavery which communism had imposed on their countryonly 90 miles away from our shore. While in the very process of carrying these true freedom fighters to their homeland. the President. at the urging of his close advisers. publicly announced that under no circumstances would the United States intervene in support of this effort. Since the whole operation had been based on adequate air cover which was not available without our assistance. these brave people were simply transported to a fiery death. or imprisonment. and the implacable chains of Communist slavery were fastened ever more firmly on the Cuban people.
