Speaker. several times over the years I have been asked why I have strong feeling relative to the creation of such a governmental commission. A factor going into my belief occurred in my childhood. I have very vivid recollections of my father telling me of some of his personal experiences when he first came to this country as a young immigrant from Ireland. how as a husky. healthy man of 21 or 22 years of age he had come to this land of freedom and opportunity in about 1889 or 1890 and was shocked by signs "No Irish need apply." How in other instances he would not be hired when the prospective employer found he was a Catholic. These stories. told me as a young boy. shocked meand when they were related to me by my father. who became an American -citizen on the very first day he was eligible to do so and was proud that he picked this country as his own. I have seen in my lifetime other cases of discrimination.
