Madam President. there has always been a close bond between Greece and America. because we both believe in the same basic principles of freedom and of good government. and because the basic documents of our Nation that were written by our Founding Fathers related to the basic principles of freedom and government originated in the Golden Age of Greece. Madam President. throughout the State of Illinois. I have many good friends who are Americans of Hellenic extraction. Many of them are Greek immigrants who came to America because America loomed great in their minds as the promised land. They have grown with America and have become leaders in the professions. and business. and the civic and public life of their respective communities. I join them in honoring Greek Independence Day.
