Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870171906

Ignoring the aged is. however. becoming increasingly difficult. In the good old days back around the turn of the century most people died of natural causes before reaching retirement or senility. Only 4 percent of the population was over 65. and most of these individuals lived either on farms where they could milk cows. watch babies. and tell tall tales. or else in immigrant ghettos where younger brothers. sisters. children. nephews. or even grandchildren felt obliged to take care of them. But today the farm and the ghetto are vanishing. Young men move out of their parents home when they marry. to settle in new neighborhoods in keeping with their youthful. middleclass. allAmerican selfportrait.
