It was annexed by imperial Russia in 1795 but at the time of the Communist revolution it broke away from the Soviet Union and proclaimed its independence. But the lights of freedom were soon put out by the sharp winds of World War II. In June. 1940 Lithuania was occupied by Soviet troops. and soon after was blackmailed into becoming the 14th Soviet republic. Thousands of Lithuanians were deported to the east as the Soviet warlords sought to communize the country. The United States refused to recognize the Communist conquest. The whiptides of war loosed the Soviet hold on Lithuania and the German Nazis occupied the country from 1941 to 1944.
