Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870152113

There are no leaders of the Jewish community in the Soviet Union in the sense that we have them in this countrynothing like the Bnai Brith or the Jewish philanthropiesbut the few remaining synagogues do have their recognized leaders. They are not necessarily given the title of president and executive vice president. but they are identified with a particular synagogue in a leadership capacityand their names are listed with the Soviet authorities. The Soviet regime has cracked down on the leading among these respected synagogue leaders. primarily as a warning at this time that it will tolerate no agitation for the emigration of Soviet Jews to Israel. This is my judgment and conclusion from what I saw and heard. At this point I should like to read to the Senate a translation of an article in the Moscow newspaper.
