Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870149935

Resistance to Soviet rule even continues in the Ukraine today. It is a sad commentary that the struggle for freedom. which was fought so bravely. was so ruthlessly crushed. and that Ukraine independence must be observed in foreign countries while the Ukrainian people themselves are enslaved. Here in the United States there are approximately 1 million Ukrainian refugees who own their homes. churches. social. political. scientific. and educational institutions. businesses. and other essentials for a life of freedom that was denied them in their country. But it is heartening to realize that despite the years of suffering Ukrainia has endured. its spirit of independence still lives. I am particularly happy to pay tribute to the great Ukrainian people for their. devotion to liberty.
