These populous and flourishing territories were completely devastated by the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. Many of the present day inhabitants are descendants of these people. the original population of Kievan Russia. The people of the eastern and southern Ukraine are for the most part descended from Ruthene immigrants from the north who. to escape the oppression of the area princes and nobles. escaped to the frontier. where they formed free and democratic communities and came to be known as Cossacks. Then in 1667 the portion east of the Dnieper River was ceded to Russia and then the Ukrainians were once more divided. the leftbank Ukraine belonging to the Poles. while the Turks controlled the southern steppes. In 1794 the major portion of the Ukrainian people came under Russian rule. as a result of the second partition of Poland. although many Ukrainians remained scattered .n the AustroHungarian Empire and in Rumania.
