After a months convalescence in the hospital. he was processed. given a job and permitted to make a new life. He was a former postal clerk who refused to join the secret police. He refused because he did not want to shoot down West Berliners and his friends. Many of the refugees who are processed through the camp are directed to that part of West Germany where they desire to go or where their talents or background fit them. We visited McNairs training field barracks where we reviewed the training of our U.S. 2d and 3d battle groups of the 6th Infantry Division. We observed signal corps and artillery practice and riot control squad practice.
