Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870128030

As mentioned above. an initial investment of approximately $15.000 is required to purchase a farm in a settlement. Figures supplied by existing settlers prove that the settler can repay the investment of his farm within 15 to 20 years. It is clear. therefore. that the Netherlands Government is already making a contribution to Dutch emigrants by supplying free services and facilities and bearing part of the cost of transportation. I understand that the Netherlands Government will also be prepared. in addition to this assistance. to investigate the possibility of a limited participation in the financing of the settlements themselves if cooperation could be obtained from the InterAmerican Development Bank and then through the extended use of local currency funds generated by Public Law 480 in Brazil. in order to finance the initial required investment of up to $15.000 per family. I would think that such a cooperative effort would be precisely what the American Government would find most encouraging.
