It was difficult for them to leave their cultivated lands and meager comforts for the uncertainty of conquering southern Utah. Two apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Orson Pratt and Erastus Snow. were chosen to head the mission of 300 families. many of them Swiss emigrants. in search of a climate favorable to raising cash crops and also to develop a chain of cities south of the "rim of the basin" to California. It was here that Erastus Snow enhanced his reputation of being second only to President Young as a colonizer and a leader of men. The Saints had confidence in his wisdom and judgment and later confirmed their trust by electing him their first State senator representing Washington.
