And West Berlin. West Germany and all of Europe would fall into the pit of Communist enslavement. This is the time to renew our pledges. to strengthen our forces in Western Europe. in concert with our allies. to do all that can be done to take care of the flood of refugees which have inundated West Berlin in recent days. to increase our continuous air alert of strategic bombers. to speed the calling up of reserve units. to cut off all trade and aid with the Communist enemy. to convince Khrushchev that we will go to the mat with him on this issue. whatever the cost. and to take every step at home and abroad to see to it that when that time comes. if it does. we are ready. If we do this. I believe we shall have both peace and freedom.
