Though Nansen displayed a rare talent in a number of fields. including science. exploration. and history. I think we should be especially mindful of his contributions as an international statesman and humanitarian. His service as the first League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. and his unflinching compassion and charity in bringing relief and assistance to Greek and Armenian refugees a half century ago. stand as a monument to international peace and justice. Nansen was a Norwegian. but he was also an actively dedicated citizen of the world. He was a unique champion of liberty. for he struggled for the freedom of people without regard for national boundaries. and pioneered in establishing humanitys responsibility through international organization.
