Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870077075

Speaker. I believe the gentleman from New York is performing a true public service this afternoon by calling this matter to the attention of the House. I know the gentleman agrees with me when I comment that it is rather ironic. to say the least. that our Nation which in its entire history has prided itself on its ability to absorb people from all sections of the world. should in recent years develop what amounts almost to a deliberate closeddoor policy which. as the gentleman has indicated. definitely discriminates against these refugees who are still suffering as a result of wartime dislocation. I know the gentleman has worked hard in the previous session. specifically in his committee. to advance sound. constructive legislation. I certainly hope that his remarks this afternoon will receive the attention of the Members and most certainly the support of the Members as well.
