They took the political leaders. the university professors. the priests. the protestant clergy. the writers. the jurists. the national figures in every field. The men and women they selected for deportation were in every case the leaders of the community and those capable of exercising leadership at every level. They were taken in dead of night. without warning. and were shipped in crowded cattle cars to the wastelands of Siberia. Many of them died during the journey.
