They invaded Lithuania and by the end of June of that year had overrun that tiny nation and enslaved its proud people under Communist tyranny. Soon the country was absorbed into the U.S.S.R. On orders from the Kremlin. thousands of Lithuanian leaders and men of prominence were summarily arrested. placed in freight cars. and exiled to distant parts of Asiatic Russia. It is estimated that during this terrorism that lasted more than a year. upwards of 50.000 inilocent and helpless Lithuanians were deported to Russia. Today. more than 20 years later. we have no knowledge of the fate of the abducted Lithuanians. except that those still alive are suffering in prison camps. On this anniversary observance of their deportation it might be a good idea to take an accounting of what we as a nation have done toward helping Lithuania and other enslaved nations achieve freedom. what we have failed to do. and what we intend to do.
