Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870066575

Mr. Speaker. this week we commemorate the anniversary of a most tragic period in the history of three Baltic nationsLithuania. Estonia. and Latvia. It concerns the events of 1940 and 1941 when these free and independent nations were overrun by the brutal forces of Communist Russia. It was in this period that the Soviet conducted mass deportations of Lithuanians. Estonians. and Latvians and exiled them to the distant corners of the Soviet Union in slave labor camps. Their "crime" was opposition to communism. Now. two decades later the fate of these thousands upon thousands of libertyloving men. women. and children is not known.
