At that point in time. the Italian peasant farmer began to outnumber the craftsman. They were poor indeed and were attracted to this land of opportunity. and when they came to America. they could qualify only for the most menial and humblest kind of labor--ditch digging. hod carrying. carpentry. and similar occupations. Despite this humility and menial toil. within one generation the Italian immigrant and his offspring has repaid America for the opportunity more than a thousandfold by his contribution to the social. cultural. and economic development of our land and also in the preservation of its institutions and liberty.
