For the Poles have carried the banner of freedom throughout the holocaust of centuries. Their respect for the individual. for the rights of man. for liberty of person. of mind. and of soul has pervaded despite all efforts to annihilate it. Since the beginning of World War II they have suffered not only the awful horrors of war known to all nations. they have been subjected to catastrophic defeat. ruthless terror of occupying forces. torture and murder both inside and outside of concentration camps. forced emigration. Yet the spirit of Poland remains unconquered. As it has endured. so will it endure.
