The number of Israeli teachers has quadrupled in the same period and its elementary school education has increased almost six times. We must keep in mind that Israels infancy was a cruel and troubled time. The barren soil. the absence of industry. the influx of immigrants. the war with the Arabs and the continued hostility of its neighbors were the heaviest of burdens to place in the path of a newborn. But the determination was there and the most important of all resources. men and women. whose daily lives were dedicated to the rearing of this infant without counting the cost of the individuals deprivations and sufferings. It is little wonder then. that the little country of Israel has been watched with consuming interest by economists. social scientists and educators throughout the world.
