It was first necessary for the Israelis to successfully repel the invading armies of the five surrounding Arab States in order to establish their right to national survival in their ancient homeland. Then it became necessary to throw open the gates of the new State to the survivors of the Nazi holocaust in Europe and to the Jews of Asia. Africa. and the Middle East. Finally. these 1 million immigrants had to be absorbed. settled. and gainfully employed and the economy of the country had to be put on a viable footing. In the past 13 years these goals have been accomplished. Because of its pioneering spirit and idealism Israel has risen to the position of a modern industrial country.
