The Senator apparently was not on the floor throughout my remarks. For instance the film said that there is no case on record of a child from one of these families having earned a college diploma. A very brief and cursory census taken in one of the agricultural counties in Florida produced 11 persons with college degrees who were teachingmost of them were teachersin the schools of that county. and who themselves had come from families of migrants. There was a statement that there was no hope for the acquisition of homes. but a very brief census in the same county showed approximately 100 homes purchased. owned. and occupied by migrant families. Other statements were made. One of them was that there was no interstate standard to safeguard the migrants as they traveled by automobile or truckgenerally by truckfrom one State to another. The fact is that Congress passed such legislation in 1956 and that the ICC has Issued comprehensive regulations which have been in effect for several years. Whether it has been effectively enforced is another question. concerning which I have no information.
