From that day to this. the Irish have persistently fought for the right to selfgovernment. in the fact of aweinspiring odds. Nor has their struggle been limited to their own shores. In 1776. the American patriot cause was promoted by many an Irish immigrant. to the benefit of every American alive today. And as recently as the past decade. Irish volunteers could be found in the ranks of the gallant little army of Israel. fighting. as always. for the right of smaller nations to determine their own destinies.
