February 22 through 26. I have long been aware of the mutual advantages that have accrued over the years to both countries as a result of the friendly regard citizens of the United States and Canada have for each other. When I was 21 years of age. as a U.S. border patrol inspector. I was assigned to duty in Derby Line. Vt.. and my wife and I resided in Rock Island. Province of Quebec. just across the international border. The border patrol worked closely with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on many occasions in a spirit of cooperation which would be difficult for two enforcement agencies to duplicate. The Second Congressional District. which I represent. borders on the Province of Quebec. and quite possibly there are more people of Canadian extraction in my district than any other district in the country. Maines tourist business depends to a very large extent upon Canadian vacationists.
