Speech #870005101

DOOLEY Dr. Tom Dooley was an exemplar of the American humanitarian impulse at its best. He was a showman and promoter of sorts. but a showman and promoter for a cause beyond himselfthat of the refugees from communism in Vietnam. or of his hospital at Muong Sing in the mountains of northern Laos. or of Medico. the organization he helped found to take medical care to the people of remote countries where it is not available. The slim young doctor. now dead of cancer at 34. lived altogether too short a life. but it was long enough to enable him to carry a bright gift of concern. brotherhood. and practical assistance to thousands of human beings who might not otherwise have known them.
