Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860262589

It is undermining our Nations respect for the dignity of labor. and labors entitlement to improved wages and working conditions. Only 2 percent of the Nations commercial farms employ Mexican nationals. To argue. as a few will do. that we must continue to import underpaid and underprivileged workers if the large scale farm operators are to survive. is to condemn American migrant farm laborers. and family farmers. to abject poverty. This will not do. It is the obligation of the operators to raise wages and improve working conditions for our own farmworkers. as they can well do. and as every other American employer is doing. either through collective bargaining or as a result of the increase in the minimum wage. plus other laws for the protection of workers.
