Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860252070

Italy will continue to grow and prosper. The United States has close ties with Italy. and despite the intervening actions of hostile Italian Governments. it has always had a high regard for the people of Italy. Italian immigrants have contributed greatly to the growth of our own United States in helping to build this new nation. It was particularly fitting. therefore. for us to contribute toward Italys recovery after the second world conflict. not only in recognition of the contribution of Italian immigrants to our own growth. but also in a reaffirmation of our friendship and of our faith in the future of the Italian Republic. United States aid. through the Marshall plan. mutual security. the United Nations. and so many other programs. helped express the American peoples friendship for a noble people who had suffered much. On this 14th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic. we can be proud that we were able to extend a helping hand to the Italian people with whom we in America have such close and common ties.
