Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860246560

All of us at that conference were deeply moved by the plight of our trade union brothers in East Germany. We did what we could to send food and medical supplies to the survivors and to rescue some of those doomed to execution. A few of the refugees were brought to Stockholm and gave us eyewitness reports on the reign of terror to which they had been subjected. They told us a story of wholesale exploitation by the Communist regime. of work speedups and stretchouts beyond the limits of human endurance. Human beings were treated with less consideration than machines.
