Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860242221

Mr. President. World Refugee Year is drawing to a close. We have still to pass refugee relief legislation of even a modest nature and object in this Congress. The President has still to advance plans for using almost onehalf of the special World Refugee Year fund of $10 million authorized by the Congress last year. In plain language. World Refugee Year has met its major objective to call to the attention of the entire world its responsibilities for those without home or country. but these responsibilities have not been fulfilled in this one year. There are continuing responsibilities and they are ours as Americans. as brothers of all who suffer because they have been deprived of freedom and rights. Mr. President. our distinguished colleague. the Senator from Michigan eloquently set forth the needs of the worlds refugees and the great and continuing heritage and strength which new immigrants have brought to our Nation. in an address before the New York Committee for World Refugee Year at the United Nations on May 24. Mr. President.
