Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860239069

It is believed that there will be no objection in the House of Representatives to the bill. Some technicalities may be involved. but basically the purpose is agreed upon. It is felt that the Immigration Service officials can render some service in this connection. but. chiefly. the matter of travel by foreigners in this country is involved. and steps should be taken to dispel the erroneous idea of many foreigners that Americans are materialistic and that travel in the United States is very expensive. The bill authorizes an appropriation in the amount of onehalf of 1 percent annually. thus depending upon the number of foreigners who visit the United States. That formula would be the criterion in connection with determining the amount to be appropriated and spent in connection with this effort.
