Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860225925

But I wish to discuss this case from the standpoint of the great moral principle that in this Government we should not be a party to mans inhumanity to man. In this case. several exCommunists testified against Willia Niukkanen. and said he was a member of the Communist Party in 1937 and 1939. before World War II. a war in which thousands of American boys died at a time when Russia was supposed to have been an ally of our country. although during the war I said Russia was not an ally. she just happened to be a country with a common enemy. But here is an uneducated. uninformed man who was tried by immigration officials. He did not have the benefit of a jury trial. because juries are not used in immigration proceedings of this kind. Our immigration officials decided that he had been a member of the Communist Party. They seek now to deport him to Finland. He is 51 years old.
