Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860212570

Government. if it expects to keep faith with those who look to us to foster democracy and individual freedom. must take a stand for moral principles in which we believe. In my opinion. if the U.S. Government continues its support of the refugee ration program in Jordan without insisting upon a verification of the refugee rolls. it will. in effect. for the sake of expediency. be participating in a program so reeking of corruption as to make a mockery of the humanitarian principles which gave birth to the refugee relief program. I hope that the Senate and the Congress will approve the amendment adopted by the committee. In some respects this is a moral issue.
