Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860174524

Mr. Speaker. the Committee on the Judiciary has recently taken adverse action on five private bills designed to grant U.S. citizenship to five refugees. one Pole and four Hungarians. who entered this country lawfully and desired to become U.S. citizens sooner than the law would permit. in order to be able to compete in the Olympic games on the U.S. team. We did not recommend to the House that it approve those bills because we believe it would be highly improper and totally out of line. both with the American tradition in sports and with the true spirit of the Olympic games. to expedite naturalization processes by legislative action in order to allow these young people to compete as Americans although they are not Americans yet. I am glad to see that the leading publication of the world of sports. Sports Illustrated. on February 15. 1960. commented on our action in a very fine statement entitled "How To Try Too Hard." The article reads as follows: How To TRY Too HARD Polishborn Jan Miecznikowski. better known as John Macy. is one of this countrys fastest distance runners. Since his emigration via West Germany in 1956 he has won six U.S. titles at distances from 3.000 meters to 6 miles. Now enrolled at the University of Houston. Macy would be proud to run for the United States in the Rome Olympics. and the United States. faced with its traditional shortage of good distance runners. would be equally proud to have him run.
