In that same year he was assigned to priestly duties in New Britain. the city with which he has been so closely identified for the 65 years since. It is typical of the man that he helped built with his own hands his first church in New Britain. working alongside the ditch digger. the bricklayer and the carpenter. When the first Church of the Sacred Heart was completed and dedicated. he founded a Polish library. where he instructed hundreds of immigrants in English and other subjects and helped prepare them for citizenship. Next he established a newspaper. the Catholic Leader. a publication whose editorial influence has crossed the oceans. As an editor he won international fame. and some of the worlds most illustrious figures engaged in correspondence with this busy Connecticut priest for whom the day never had enough hours.
