Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860165105

Mr. Speaker. the Lithuanian people preserved their devotion to freedom and their strong national tradition through centuries of czarist oppression. We have reason to be confident their free spirit will survive the present rule of Soviet commissars. Indeed. as the New York Times pointed out in an editorial this morning. the Soviet Government has been unable to suppress this tradition. Torture. imprisonment. massacre. and mass deportation have failed to kill the spirit of the Lithuanian people. The frequent replacement of Russian commissars eloquently testifies to Lithuanian courage and determination. We pay honor to these dauntless men and women here today.
