Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860165076

It saddens me to note that this precious prize of independence was again snatched from our Lithuanian friends within a relatively short period. On June 15. 1940. the Soviet Union violated all of its treaty commitments with Lithuania and. without provocation or justification. in utter contempt of international morality. the Red Army seized control of this small nation. Since that time. the Kremlin has deliberately set about exterminating Lithuanian culture and suffocating all independent sentiment. Deportations. under one guise or another. have exiled Lithuanians to forced labor camps in European Russia. the Arctic region. the Urals. Siberia. and the Far East. But the Lithuanian people. despite such adversity. have never abandoned their fight for freedom and liberty.
