I wish to say how much I am indebted to Mr. Joseph Buttinger for his analysis of "The Ugly American" from which I have liberally borrowed. The author of a study of Indochinese history entitled "The Smaller Dragon." he is an active figure in the International Rescue Committee. and has worked hard to help political refugees in Asia and Europe. He is also chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Friends of Vietnam. and was conference chairman of a meeting held in Washington in April 1959. to consider the theme of "Aid to Vietnam: An American Success Story." Mr. Buttingers devasating analysis of "The Ugly American" appeared in the summer. 1959. issue of Dissent.
