It is understandable that Jews in the Soviet Union regard this action of the Soviet Government as an evil omen for their future. It is no wonder that they are reported to be in a state of near panic. For the closing of this synagogue. which has historical and sentimental attachments for Jews on both sides of the Iron Curtain including many who emigrated to America years ago. is but the latest of a series of ominous developments in the Soviet Unions treatment of its Jewish population. There have been constant reports of synagogues being closed. of cemeteries desecrated. of arrests for alleged Zionist activities. of bans on private prayer meetings and the baking of unleavened bread. It has even become impossible in some instances to say prayers for the dead according to the ritual of the Jewish faith.
