Facts and statistics showed hundreds of teenaged addictions first were acquired during visits to Mexican border towns and thereafter fed by the flow of narcotics from our sister Republic to the south. Recognizing the problem. but pleading the necessity of cooperation with Mexican officials not only on narcotics traffic control. but many other international criminal operations. our State Department repeatedly stated closing the border would make such cooperative efforts between the two countries difficult. if not impossible. As an alternative. additional customs and immigration personnel were assigned along the border and the activities of U.S. narcotics agents in TDIX July 20 conjunction with State and local police and sheriffs squads were beefedup. For a time the border traffic slowed down. But eager pushers and the sizable. efficient production and wholesale distributors of illegal narcotics behind them have found new ways and means to circumvent border interception.
