He had his own unique greatness. He was born July 29. 1840. The place was Schwersen. now a part of Poland. Simon grew up wanting to be a doctor. He was still in high school when he saved enough money to leave Schwerson for America. Like most immigrants he appreciated the value of an education more than the nativeborn Americans do. Simon finished his medical training at the Medical College in Virginia. and served his internship in Charleston. He joined the Confederate Army as an assistant surgeon and. for the last 3 years of the war. saw service with the Army of Northern Virginia.
