Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860025090

Mr. Antoniou served honorably on U.S. vessels during the critical war years. He was unable to qualify for naturalization under the Nationality Act of 1940 because his actual sea time was a few days short of the required period. He cannot qualify under the Refugee Act because he was and still is a seaman serving on American ships and is no longer a resident of Greece. During the period of consideration of this bill Alexander Antoniou is residing in Portland. Oreg.. with his brother. who has made an affidavit of support in his behalf. He also has a brother in Bridgeport. Conn. Both brothers are naturalized citizens. Mr. Antoniou has always paid Federal income tax on his earnings as a seaman and. as I have said. he served honorably on American vessels in combat areas during World War II.
