Notwithstanding. the Bucharest government was admitted to the United Nations. December 1955. by means of the famous package deal. Since the Hungarian uprising the Russians have tightened their control on Rumania. A new wave of terror and persecution is reported from the country. Arrests. deportations and the whole gamut of police state abuses are mounting. Economic exploitation has greatly impoverished a country which was previously considered as the granary of Europe and which possessed the most important deposits of oil on the Continent outside Russia. The Rumanian question is a part. although not in the immediate forefront. of the complex issue raised by the Berlin crisis.
