Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860016057

Not least of these are our minimum wage laws that are designed to protect the employers who pay fair wages against the competition of those who would depress wages. as a means of gaining a competitive advantage. We have also taken steps to protect the American wage standard by preventing an influx of workers from abroad. Our restrictive immigration laws were to a great degree designed for that very purpose. The effect of these various laws. including our farm price support program and obligatory collective bargaining. have set us apart from the rest of the world on a plateau. competitively speaking. Already many of our exports are highly subsidized as a means of moving our goods into world markets.
