Session #86 · 1959–61

Speech #860012930

Lithuanias subjection to Russia lasted 120 years. In all that long time. however. the spirit of the people never weakened. They never lost hope of regaining their freedom and independence. The oppressive rule of the czars prevented economic and cultural development. The only way out for many was by emigration to the New World. Happily for us. there are now over a million Lithuanians in the United States. The people in Lithuania know that you will speak for them in the free world. so that the free world will not forget its obligations toward those who live under the hated domination of the Communists.
