As of June 1958. the rate was 15.4 percent and in the Detroit area. which I represent. the rate was 18 percent. A number of basic factors account for the situation in Michigan. Our State has been the victim of the conditions which I have briefly referred to previously. that is. increased population and increased output. Because of a high birthrate and immigration. Michigans population has been growing at a rate much faster than the national average. and as a result a greater number of workers are constantly entering the labor market. Automation and increased efficiency have increased production. but have reduced the number of jobs available.
