One can hardly be in that area 24 hours without being told. not only by one. but probably by every person he meets. that it is the one big problem in that area. If one happens to meet a protagonist on one side. and then one on the other side. he will get both sides of the story within a few minutes. I spent an active period in that area In 1953. as chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee of the Senate. and also as a member of the Refugee Subcommittee. My particular mission was not to settle any problems with respect to the establishment of Israel on the Israeli or the Arab side. but to see what could be done about the refugees. The United States Government. through the United Nations. has spent approximately 70 percent of the cost of maintaining and feeding the refugees.
