We cannot change our tariffs or our quota system without the consent of these foreign nations. whose only desire is to acquire a complete and free access to the American domestic market which is the largest in the world. The importation of frozen tuna has Increased in the last 10 years from 9 million pounds to 90 million pounds. so that today the domestic producer has only 30 percent of the American domestic market and is on the verge of collapse. Yet it was the American producer who developed the industry. and the market. by intensive advertising. and once the American tuna industry is destroyed. and the foreign producers control 100 percent of the market. the price of tuna will exceed the current domestic prices. as there will be no competition.
