Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850245314

I repeat that transportation facilities of the steamship lines are also subsidized heavily. as we heard only a few days ago. Under these circumstances. the domestic minerals industry is fighting a losing battle for survival. The mining industry has proposed. and I have championed. tariff and import quota action to remedy this situation. This action would nullify the unfavorable conditions under which the industry is now forced to operate and would Insure the domestic industry an adequate share of the domestic market. However. the administration has taken the position that the imposition of quotas. as recommended by 3 of the 6 tariff commissioners in the recent escape clause decision. would seriously impair international relations in these difficult times. and would also affect the United States economically.
