As the world remembers. tragedy struek Johnstown in 1889. After the great flood and subsequent fires. survivors undertook to rebuild a new city out of almost complete devastation. Immigrants by the thousands had moved into Johnstown to mine the coal that came into demand and to provide the sinew for the mills that would eventually establish Johnstown as one of Americas most vital industrial cities. But this babel of tongues in no way interfered with the work of reconstruction and rehabilitation made necessary by the disaster. Out of the efforts of the native Americans. the British. the Irish. and the numerous nationals from the Continent--and with the sympathetic assistance of grieved people throughout the United Statesthe plants. the business houses. and the homes of Johnstown were quickly rebuilt.
